  1. A full life encompasses both joy and sorrow deeply felt often in close proximity to each other. In a recent NPR interview, Patti Smith talked about the experience she shared with her sister at their beloved brother’s funeral. Her brother had been mischievous as a child, the three siblings often laughing until they were sick to their stomachs. During the funeral, she was deep in sorrow when something caused her sister to laugh, as thoughts of the mischievousness of her brother crept in, they both laughed and kept laughing so hard that the funeral director scolded the adult women. In the interview, Patti Smith said felt okay about it because you can’t have just sorrow or just joy, you need both to fully experience life. Just as when experiencing joy, thoughts of our losses will sometimes enter our minds, so to can joy enter during sorrow.
